Down Products

When to Wash your Garment

A buildup of sweat or oil from your skin often means that your garment should be washed. Dark spots on the lining around the neck and cuffs indicate such a build up. If your garment is visibly dirty in other locations, we recommend washing your garment as well.

For those that use their down garment for high intensity activities, we recommend the garment be washed 2-3 times a season. For casual users, we recommend to wash your garment once a season. We also recommend to wash your garment at end of the season to ensure it is clean before storage.

Washing Instructions

For washing your down products, we recommend using a technical down detergent such as Grangers Down Wash or Nikwax Down Wash. Read the instructions for your detergent provided by the manufacturer before use. If you only have access to regular liquid detergent, only use a small amount and run a rinse cycle after the wash to ensure all the detergent is gone. We also recommend to use a front loading washing machine because the agitator of top loading machines can damage down feathers. If you only have access to a top loading machine, place your garment in a mesh bag before washing to help protect the down. Do not use fabric softener or bleach on your down garments.

Wash your down products individually to avoid damaging them.

1. Close the main zipper and all zipper pockets of your garment. Loosen all the adjustable elastic cords on your garment.

2. Set your washing machine to cold (30º) and if possible add a second rinse cycle. If this feature is not available, run the machine again on rinse once the washing cycle is finished. It is important to ensure all the detergent is washed out. Follow the directions of your detergent for the amount to use.

3. Remove your garment from the washing machine and shake it gently to remove any water from the surface. Before placing your garment in the dryer, lay it flat on a towel. Roll your garment in the towel and press down gently. This is to transfer some of the water from the garment to the towel (optional step).

4. Set your dryer to low heat and place your garment inside. Put in a couple clean tennis balls or dryer balls, they help the down regain it's full loft. Drying your garment may take up to 3 hours so you may need to restart the low heat cycle.

5. We recommend to check the dryness of your garment every 45 minutes until it is fully dry. Once fully dry, your garment should return to it's original loft and there should be no clumps of down.

*** Our down garments are treated with a DWR (durable water repellent) coating. After use and several washing and drying cycles, the DWR coating weakens. If you notice that water does not bead up on the outer fabric anymore and the fabric is absorbing water, add this following step, between step 3 and 4, to your next wash cycle: after removing your garment from the washing machine, hang it and spray it with a DWR coating. We recommend Granger or Nikwax. Follow their instructions for the application of the coating and then dry your garment following our instructions. Granger and Nikwax also sell down 2 in 1 down detergent and DWR coating for simpler use.

Hard Shell Product

When to Wash your Garment

A buildup of sweat or oil from your skin often means that our garment should be washed. Dark spots on the lining around the neck and cuffs indicate such a build up. If your garment is visibly dirty in other locations, we recommend washing your garment as well.

For those that use their Hard Shell garment for high intensity activities, we recommend the garment be washed approximately every 20 uses. For casual users, we recommend to wash your garment once you see the visible signs of oil build up as mentioned above.

If you notice that water  no longer beads up on your shell product and the fabric is absorbing , this is a sign that your garment needs a wash and dry cycle. Washing and drying your garment helps re-activate the DWR coating which repels water.
